With murky production, fuzzy electric guitar and flittering flute dominating, Deafman Glance, much like its immediate predecessors, yawns like it’s 4 in the morning.
The result is an album that has more moments within tracks than standout numbers. On Deafman Glance, Ryley Walker seems to have taken myriad snippets and forced them into nine songs full of tempo shifts, changes of thematic scenery and segues that are occasionally smooth and often awkward. Though the similarities were never overt, Walker’s DMB influences become clear on “Busted Stuff.” Walker’s success with the lead single is how he’s made it simultaneously homage and reinterpretation, indicating that remaking full album might not be such a bad idea.
